Reddit was created by college students
In 2005, two recently graduated college students came up with an idea to start a website that had a voting system for the online community to decide what was newsworthy and what was not. Users can make their own posts with their own links and information, which can be voted upon by other users. The best post would rise to the top.
Find your community through subreddits
You can only add subreddits once you have made your own account. Subreddits are individual posts dedicated to a particular theme and topic. There are thousands of subreddits to choose from on the site with the most random topic, like r/politics or even r/WatchPeopleDieInside.
Subreddits are named with a lowercase “r” at the beginning, followed by a slash, then the name of the subreddit itself. Subreddits are hosted by moderators and each “community” has its own rules on posts.
You can simply find subreddits that interest you by typing a topic in the search box located in the upper part of the homepage for mobile users and in the upper-right-hand corner for desktop users and hitting enter.
A list of suggested subreddit topics would then appear and you can subscribe to the ones that you like by clicking the “join” button. Your homepage will then be filled with posts from that subreddit. As you subscribe to more subreddits, your homepage will become more distinct with different posts from all the subreddits you have joined.
There will also be a list across the top of your homepage of all the subreddits you have subscribed to. You can check on a particular subreddit by clicking its name and you will be directed to that specific page. All of the posts in subreddits are then arranged according to the user’s votes, but recent posts can also be seen for them to have a chance to be seen and voted upon.
Reddit works using an upvote and downvote system
The website’s content is based on what the community decides. This is where voting comes in. On particular posts you find interesting, you can “upvote” it by clicking the up arrow to show your appreciation. On the opposite side, you can “downvote” the post by clicking the down arrow. There is a gray number with an arrow above and below it to the left of every post which represents the rank of the post itself. This simply is the number of upvotes minus the number of downvotes. This system also works for comments too, there are up and down arrows next to every comment underneath a post.

Post what interests you on Reddit
Although posting is not at all necessary, contributing by posting, voting, and commenting will make your experience with Reddit all the more fun!
In creating a new post, simply head to a subreddit and click “Create Post” located on the right-hand side of the website. There are three types of posts you can share:
- Link – Sharing a link to take users to a different website.
- Image & Video – Share an image or video with a simple title.
- Post – A simple text post.
It is important to take note that all of your posts should follow the subreddit’s guidelines to keep the theme of the said subreddit going.
Unsubscribing from a Subreddit
If you find yourself in a subreddit that you’re no longer interested in, you can unsubscribe at any time. At the upper-left corner of your screen, click the “My Subreddits,” scroll down to “Edit Subscriptions,” and next to any subreddit, you can click the red unsubscribe button. Doing this will unsubscribe you from the subreddit and you will not be able to see any of it on your feed.
Creating multireddits
In simple terms, a multireddit is a place where you can group other subreddits on a particular topic. For example, you follow different subreddits about television shows, grouping them together using multireddits will help you for easier browsing.
To create a multireddit, click on the small grey bar on the left edge of the screen and a menu will appear. Then under “Multireddits” click “create.” You will then be taken to a page where you can add subreddits by using the search box on the left to find the subreddits you want and clicking on the plus symbol.
Following Reddiquette
Reddit has a set of rules and guidelines that users must follow. Proper “reddiquette” includes avoiding self-promotion and using the appropriate grammar and spelling in posting. You may be corrected by other people!
Reddit is not to be used as a website solely for advertising. You can be flagged as a spammer if you post too many links or posts in a short amount of time and have your access to the website revoked.
Other rediquette rules range from looking for the original source of a story rather than linking a blog that got the story from another blog, making sure that the story you will post has not been posted yet, posting to the subreddit that your story fits the most, to being friendly to other users on the site. It is also important to note that the users of Reddit are people too; be kind to them.
You can accumulate Reddit Karma
There is such a thing as good karma on the site that you can earn by participating in subreddits and following good reddiquette. Reddit karma is used to establish the credibility of users, so the higher karma, the higher the influence one has on the site. You can see how much good karma you have by clicking on your username on the upper right of the site.
Reddit has a lot more features that we were not able to cover here. However, these can help you in getting started. Good luck with making your new account and welcome to the community.
