Uncovering Connections in the Political Twittersphere

Twitter is emerging as a power political tool. Sysomos, a social media analytics company, recently took a deeper look at the political Twittersphere and identified the 168 most active political voices in the U.S, the U.K. and Canada. Coming out on top were

  1. @schwarzenegger
  2. @nansen
  3. @gstephanopoulos
  4. @markwarner
  5. @latimestot

It’s an interesting list which hints at who the political influencers are on Twitter. But how do we reach them?

If you want to connect with a hard to reach person, one of the best ways to do so is through their friends. This is true in real life and on social media sites, including Twitter. In fact, a new class of applications are emerging to help people figure out who influences the influencers.

One such application, Peter Warden’s Mailana, has huge potential. Give it a Twitter username and it will tell you who the top people are who have reciprocal public conversations with that user. In other words, Mailana tells you who they are engaging with the most.

For example, Nansen Malin is one of the top conservatives on Twitter with over 117,000 followers. Of this staggering number of followers, who does she converse with most?

  1. Paula Gardner, conservative blogger
  2. Michael Leahy, conservative author of Rules for Conservative Radicals
  3. Tony Katz, self-proclaimed “proud American and Capitalist”
  4. Vann Schaffner, pathologist and cyclist
  5. Luanne Van Werven, chairman of the Whatcom County Republican Party

Mailana isn’t a one stop shop for engaging with influencers, and it probably won’t be very useful for connecting with those high profile Twitter celebrities who have PR flunkies posting all their tweets. But Mailana does shed some light on who these people are connected with and could be a useful tool for anyone who is struggling to get their message across to the right people.
