A terrific post on the UK Natural History museum’s Antarctic conservation blog showing the miraculous state of preservation of Scott’s Terra Nova hut at Cape Evans.

When we arrived, we had to dig our way through snow drifts to get into the hut. We then had to find our way around by torchlight until the windows had been cleared of snow and the shutters opened. Despite the howling wind outside, it was very quiet and atmospheric. …

I’d forgotten just how many artefacts the hut contains – they illustrate every aspect of the explorers’ lives. I recognised many of the provisions, including a stack of tins of ox tongue and cases of salt jars. But there are also tables full of scientific and electrical equipment such as burners, glass flasks, batteries and test tubes, and some photographic equipment in the small dark-room at the back of the hut.
